General Stripe Statistics

The following sections will cover general statistics about Stripe and its operations.

Here are some facts that are too short to deserve dedicated sections:

  • More than 100 businesses passed $1 million in sales daily when using Stripe (in 2021)
  • Around 60% of tech. businesses that went public around 2021 used Stripe.
  • Stripe processes more than 500 million Application Programming Interface (API) requests daily.
  • During Black Friday & Cyber Monday (BFCM) 2023, Stripe API had a peak of 27,395 requests per second.
  • Stripe API maintained an uptime of 99.999% during BFCM 2023.
  • More than 30,000 businesses that used Stripe during BFCM 2023 broke all-time sales records.

Let’s dive in.

1. Stripe Processes a Lot of Transactions

In 2023 alone, Stripe processed a total of $1 trillion in payment volume [1].

2. Amount Stripe Processed During Black Friday & Cyber Monday

Stripe processed more than $18.6 billion worth of transactions on Black Friday and Cyber Monday (BFCM) of 2023 [2]. This amount is an increase of more than 300 times over the last 10 years.

3. Time Stripe Saved on Checkout Times

Link, a one-click checkout solution that Stripe offers, saved customers more than 530,000 minutes in total during checkouts. This apparently saved them a year’s worth of time.

4. Stripe Number of Employees

As of 2022, Stripe had 7,000 employees worldwide, according to unofficial sources.

I can’t find any “official” information on what their current count is aside from what Stripe listed on their LinkedIn, which is 1,001–5,000 employees. Who knows how many employees they actually had now.

No matter, the number of employees sunk (by a lot). Why? Allegedly because of the end of the pandemic. A time where many tech companies are firing all the people hired during their hiring spree between 2019 and 2022.

But Stripe states differently. They fired 1,000 people in November 2022, possibly after the data above was released, due to “economic challenges.”

5. Payment Methods That Stripe Supports

Stripe supports 54 payment methods in total.

Here’s a breakdown of each category:

6. Stripe Availability Globally

Stripe is available in 46 countries. Stripe Atlas—a service to incorporate businesses in Delaware, US—is open to use for businesses in around 140 countries. Paystack, a Stack subsidiary, is available in 4 countries.

Stripe Financial Statistics

The sections below will dive into some of Stripe’s financial statistics.

And here are statistics that were too short to make it into their own section:

  • Stripe earns $2.9 billion on every $100 billion in transactions that they process due to their 2.9% fee in addition to $0.30 per transaction.

Here are the rest.

1. Stripe Revenue Growth (Globally)

At the time of writing, Stripe hasn’t released their 2023 revenue. However, they made $14 billion (gross revenue) in 2022, an increase from the years prior.

Here’s the trend:

2015 and 2016 were weird numbers to pull up. The information I found from Forbes suggested they made $450 million in 2015. Okay, that’s trustworthy. Many other sites that pulled their resources from Backlinko suggested that Stripe made $450 million in 2016 but didn’t list anything for 2015.

2. How Much Has Stripe Raised?

Stripe has raised a total of $8.74 billion since 2010.

Here’s all the funding that they’ve received over time [3 paywalled]:

Stripe User Statistics

We’ll explore user statistics for Stripe throughout the following sections.

Here are some numbers that were too short to deserve dedicated sections:

  • More than 2.72 million websites (globally) used Stripe as of January 2024
  • 10% of online shoppers worldwide have bought from a business that uses Stripe
  • Websites in more than 164 countries use PayPal over Stripe.
  • More than 1,000 companies joined Stripe daily in 2022

Let’s dive in.

1. User Demographics

Business owners (who are men) make up 61.42% of Stripe’s demographics. Women make up for 38.58%. And the most common age range is between 25 and 34 years old.

Here’s a further breakdown:

2. Stripe Market Share

Stripe takes 19.45% of the market share of payment processors used. The second-highest market share behind PayPal (which claims 41.87%).

Let’s see the breakdown:

3. Market Share by Region

Stripe has the largest market share in North America at 70.2%.

Here’s how they do in other regions

4. Number of Businesses That Use Stripe

More than 4 million websites (in total) use Stripe as a payment processor [4]. Over 1.1 million of these websites are active.

5. Big Companies That Use Stripe

Here’s a list of the big dogs who use Stripe as a payment processor:

6. Which Country Has the Most Stripe Users?

The United States, by far, has the most websites with Stripe integration at 673,952 sites. The United Kingdom and France follow.

By how much?

Let’s see:

How many sites in each country use other payment processors, like Shopify Payments for instance? We cover that in a separate statistics guide.

Statistics for Other Stripe Products

These sections will include statistics for other products that Stripe owns. For instance, Stripe Radar or Atlas.

The following statistics aren’t long enough to justify writing sections on them:

  • 43% of Stripe Atlas users are first-time business owners.
  • More than 40,000 companies had used Stripe Atlas in 2023. Compare that to the 15,000 companies in 2022.
  • More than 15,000 companies hailing from 40+ countries bought carbon removal credits via Stripe Climate.
  • Businesses that accepted financing from Stripe Capital grew their revenue 114% faster than businesses that didn’t.
  • 5.5% of businesses that used Stripe Capital had previously gotten a loan from traditional lenders.
  • Stripe customers (businesses) purchased more than 250,000 Stripe Climate contributions.

I’m not going to mention it later. But Stripe Climate helps businesses fight climate change by directly funding the development of technologies that remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Here are the rest of the statistics.

1. Users for Stripe Payments WordPress Plugin

More than 15,737 websites (globally) use Stripe’s WordPress plugin, Stripe Payments. 9,129 of these sites are active. The rest aren’t. And 5,191 of the total sites are in the US. 678 of these users are in France. And 642 of them are in the UK.

The Stripe Payments WordPress plugin lets businesses accept card payments on WordPress sites. It integrates with Stripe and provides buttons or shortcodes to easily add "Buy Now" options for products or services.

There’s nothing else to it. However, WooCommerce, part of WordPress, has a similar plugin. But different statistics.

2. Websites Using Stripe Payment Plugin for WooCommerce

More than 14,000 websites worldwide use Stripe’s plugin for WooCommerce, an e-commerce extension for WordPress.

The information that I found doesn’t specify whether these websites are active.

And here’s the distribution of these websites throughout the following countries:

3. Stripe Atlas Users

More than 20,000 companies have used Stripe Atlas. What year? I can’t find a specific time. However, I know it’s not 2020 because 10,000 companies used Atlas during that year.

And what is Stripe Atlas?

It streamlines Delaware (a US state) incorporation by handling the paperwork for you.

Delaware is famous for businesses of all sizes—for instance, Amazon—because it has lenient taxes due to not having to pay corporate income tax. Moreover, companies only need to disclose their registered agents when registering a business. Improving their privacy.

4. Number of Fraud Checkouts Prevented

Stripe Radar, a fraud prevention solution, prevented more than 16.7 million attempts of fraudulent transactions. Transactions that could have otherwise led to chargebacks.

5. Stripe Acquisitions

Stripe has acquired 14 companies (so far).

Here’s a breakdown:

I couldn’t find any information on how much Stripe paid to acquire these companies.

Conclusion

Stripe processes a lot of sales annually and offers decent chargeback protection. But it doesn’t claim as much market share as PayPal. That doesn’t matter, though. Since businesses can use both payment processors simultaneously.

No matter which payment processor you use (if you’re a business), you’ll need chargeback prevention. Otherwise, customers can damage your company’s ability to use Stripe if you get too many chargebacks. Learn how our tool can help prevent chargebacks from happening.
